The Centre for Mental Health works at the cutting edge of research. We aim to improve the mental health of individuals through research and development, training, policy and the dissemination of health information. We focus persisting mental health problems – those associated with high levels of disability and service need.
Our goal is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in severe mental health disorders and to improve the lives of people with a severe mental illness, through high-quality research and the translation of research into practice and policy.
To achieve this goal, we are focussing our research on two synergistic streams:
- the mechanisms underpinning mental health problems – research to understand the mechanisms that underlie mental health conditions, spanning neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social processes
- the treatments for mental health problems – developing and implementing novel treatments to improve the lives of people with mental illness.
