Financial initiatives for asylum seekers and refugees

Who is eligible?

An individual or dependants of individuals are eligible to participate in the Asylum Seeker VET (ASVET) Program, if they:

  • hold any humanitarian, protection, or refugee visa in Australia
  • have applied for a humanitarian, protection or refugee visa and hold a bridging visa for this purpose
  • have made an application under s.417 or s.48b of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) which is yet to be determined and hold a bridging visa.

Individuals must have study rights, and work rights are required for programs that include work placement.

Initiatives

Skills First program

If you hold one of the visas above and are applying for a Certificate I to IV or a Diploma to Advanced Diploma, you’re eligible for a Skills First place and could have your citizenship requirement waived.

If you’re applying for a Certificate I to IV, you may also receive a concession rate on your course fees. If you are applying for a Diploma or Advanced Diploma you will also need to apply for a Swinburne Welcome Scholarship so that your Skills First place fees are covered by the scholarship.

Note: To apply for a skills first place, you must submit your application on campus.

Free TAFE for Priority Courses

If you’re eligible for a Skills First place, you may also be able to apply for Free TAFE for Priority Courses. You’ll need to complete your application on campus.

Swinburne Welcome Scholarship

If you hold one of the visas listed above and are applying for an undergraduate course, a Diploma/Advanced Diploma or UniLink Diploma, you may be eligible for a Swinburne Welcome Scholarship.

Swinburne Welcome Scholarships include a full fee waiver. In applying for an undergraduate or Unlink Diploma course you will need to submit an online course application as an international student and apply for a Swinburne Welcome Scholarship.
