The Swinburne University of Technology community has been devastated to learn that one of our international students, Mr Ithamar Avnon, was a passenger on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Mr Avnon was in the second year of a Bachelor of Business (International Business) in the Faculty of Business and Enterprise.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

This week Swinburne will reach out to Mr Avnon's family and friends, and to the ambassadors of Israel and the Netherlands of which we believe Mr Avnon held dual citizenship.

Swinburne shares the sadness and shock felt by communities around the world over the fate of MH17.

Melbourne has been particularly affected, with the loss of many Victorians, the loss of participants due to attend the World AIDS Conference in Melbourne, and now through the loss of one of our students.

Swinburne will be offering support services to staff and students affected by this tragedy.
