Support service
If you are considering establishing an online journal, please contact Nyssa Parkes or Rebecca Parker.
Standard level of support
The Online Journal Systems (OJS) platform allows journal editors to manage the stages of issue creation from author submission through to publication.
While the Swinburne Online Journals service provides technical assistance and advice, it is assumed that peer review and editorial tasks are performed by the journal's editorial committee/board.
Services provided
Swinburne Online Journals can provide support and advice in the following areas:
- Journal setup (preferences and configuration)
- Populating 'about the journal' pages (example)
- ISSN registration
- Ongoing support / training for:
- publication of new issues
- using the site for managing submissions
- adding users / roles
- contact point for technical issues/bugs
- general troubleshooting
- Scholarly publishing advice
- open access publishing
- registering for an ISSN
- peer review models
- indexing by aggregation services
- copyright and licensing
The OJS platform
The platform allows editors to move a submission through these stages, managing versions of documents, and schedule an issue for publication. Journal editors can choose to omit stages of this process and proceed straight to publication of an issue. For a more detailed view of the platform's extended capabilities and processes, please see this extract from OJS in an hour (PDF).
A typical use of the platform is set out into four stages:
Submission by author
Author registers and submits manuscript and details to platform.
Peer review
Editors assigns reviewer/s to each paper. Reviewers submit reviews. Editor accepts or declines paper.
Copyedit
Editor uploads new version after workign through errors and style with author.
Layout and publication
Final version (PDF) with issue numbers and page numbers is created and uploaded. Issue is published.
Commercial level of support
Swinburne Online Journals can also offer commercial level support. This is a charged service, and a quote can be prepared after scoping individual requirements.
