Internships

Internships are available in many faculties at Swinburne, across both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with the aim of developing students’ professional and practical skills, and encouraging them to apply skills and knowledge acquired through study in a real-life environment. Students are placed with an employer to work on a research project or undertake work experience under the guidance of industry and academic supervision, generally for two or three days a week throughout the semester. They are also expected to participate in weekly seminars or classes. Internships are unpaid and form part of a course, allowing interns to earn credit towards their degree.    

Examples of internships at Swinburne are: FICT’s Internship Project Unit FICT’s IT Project Management Internship Project FLSS’s Internship in Social Research FLSS’s Internship in Political Research Other forms of Internships at Swinburne Internships are also available to degree-qualified international students through Swinburne College’s Skills Migrant Internship Programs in Accounting and Computer Science. Traineeships and apprenticeships are available through Swinburne TAFE. All undergraduate engineering students must complete the Professional Experience in Engineering unit Paid Internships The Industry Engaged Learning office is exploring the possibility of developing other paid, non-credit bearing internship opportunities. Please note that work restrictions apply to international students in Australia on student visas, students admitted into programs with significant levels of advanced standing and students who undertake Swinburne programs in online/distance mode, designed and offered in conjunction with overseas or industry partners or delivered by Open Universities Australia.
