Mode-Selective Couplers for Few-Mode Optical Fibre Transmission Systems

Professor John Love

3:30 pm Friday, 15 November 2013, EN413 Lecture Theatre (EN Building), Hawthorn.

There is currently significant interest in the use of few-mode fibres to enhance the capacity of optical transmission systems by using each mode of the fibre as an independent data channel. In this talk, we will show how each mode can be independently excited at the beginning of the system and likewise detected at the end of the system using special modeselective couplers that are insensitive to modal field orientation. A number of collaborative projects are providing experimental verification of the theoretical predictions.
