Health Workforce Australia has predicted a shortfall of over 120,000 nurses by 2024, as growing demand for nurses outstrip the supply of graduated students. The steep learning curve between theory and practice has proven to be a difficult challenge for nursing students, particularly those who attend classes solely online.

This has been further exacerbated by COVID-19 disruptions, which have impacted workplaces, university campuses, schools and childcare centres. This has resulted in more nursing students than ever attending online classes, with many reporting significant levels of stress and anxiety, particularly during the transition to on-campus lab work.

To tackle these challenges, Online Education Services (powering Swinburne Online) have partnered with the Cloud Innovation Centre.

To gain a clearer understanding on the project context and requirements, the team had a meeting with multiple key stakeholders as well as exploring the space at Swinburne’s Nursing Simulation Lab. Once the project scope was defined, the team analysed the feasibility of the solution and produced a prototype based on what is required.

The proposed solution will be a web application where nursing students can have a 360° view of the Nursing Simulation Lab and gain familiarity with the practical activities. In addition, it will allow academic staffs to track the students’ progress to gain insight into their learning experiences.

All of this will be achieved through leveraging AWS’s industry-leading benefits and its wide array of services. This is an overview of the user interface prototype. It adheres to Swinburne’s brand guidelines and comprises of a smooth onboarding experience with interactive elements such as linked videos with 360° capabilities and tailor-made embedded content.

Improvements were made based on stakeholders’ feedback to incorporate features that will produce an enriching user experience. In the upcoming phase, the team will be using the 360° camera to capture the physical environment of the Nursing Simulation Lab.

This content will be used during the development phase where the team will work closely with a senior solutions architect. Prospective users will be involved in the testing phase prior to official rollout to ensure a usable product with high satisfaction as its the top priority.
