Aims and objectives

This unit provides students with an insight into the tradition of the Italian novel and culture to achieve an in-depth understanding of a selection of the most representative Italian novels and the role of the novel in the making of the new Italian nation since the nineteenth century.

After successfully completing this unit, you will be able to:

1. Analyse and evaluate the impact of novel writing in shaping the Italian nation and its literary language;
2. Evaluate how novels are interconnected with other art forms (i.e film, art, music and opera) as well as history, politics and society in Italy;
3. Appreciate the nuances of Italian novels and understand how their stories are imbedded in the collective imagery and national ethos;
4. Critique the development of Italy as a modern nation.
