Aims and objectives

This unit introduces a diverse variety of circus specialties and apparatus used in the contemporary circus industry with the aim of selecting suitable study options. Students develop the skills required to work within and contribute to a circus ensemble. They also examine aspects of circus history, styles and traditions from around the world.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Identify aspects of the Euro-American circus history (18th century to 1970s) in written form.
2. Understand which specialty skills and apparatus are optimal for their physicality.
3. Understand the fundamental skills required to be part of an ensemble.
4. Identify a variety of circus styles, traditions and genres.
