Aims and objectives

This unit introduces advanced systems-based sustainability thinking through a review of selected sustainability practice frameworks, and provides opportunities for students to apply this thinking to designing appropriate responses to complex sustainability problems. This unit will prepare students to lead processes for activating and embedding sustainability culture and practice in businesses, government and non-government organisations, social enterprise, community groups and project teams.
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Integrate design research, design strategy and sustainability practice from a complex systems perspective
2. Develop an investigative and research-based sustainable systems project brief demonstrating an understanding of system contexts, scales and hierarchies
3. Synthesise and apply the unit themes to sustainable systems design practice through a well-developed design studio project solution
4. Communicate sustainable systems design issues and processes
5. Facilitate sustainable systems design processes appropriate to project contexts
