Aims and objectives

This unit provides pre-service teachers with an understanding of the variety of needs and social and cultural backgrounds of primary school age children. Pre-service teachers will become familiar with many of the diverse needs of primary students including social and cultural backgrounds children can present with and how to cater to them effectively in order to support inclusive practices.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Critically analyse the use of strategies used to support students of diverse needs and backgrounds.
2. Identify a variety of diverse needs and backgrounds, and interpret how they interact with the primary learning environment.
3. Evaluate different pedagogical approaches to that ensure all children are catered for in the educational setting.
4. Analyse national and state policies and practices currently in place for supporting children with diverse needs.
