Overview

This is the first of three professional experience units in the Master of Teaching (Primary). In this unit pre-service teachers will undertake a 20 day professional experience in a primary school under the supervision of an approved mentor. Pre-service teachers will involve themselves in the life of the school and reflect on their practice and performance supported by their in school mentor and university academic staff. In this unit, pre-service teachers will develop their understanding of relevant National and/or State or Territory curriculum documents, the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and relevant National and/or State or Territory codes of Conduct and Ethics.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Discuss and analyse curriculum documents and resources in relation to effective teaching and learning and contribute to the planning and implementation of learning experiences.
  • Demonstrate professional and caring relationships with education professionals, students and families, with acknowledgement of the role of the learning environment.
  • Discuss, analyse and begin to use a range of teaching and assessment strategies.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviour in accordance with the standards, codes and policies relevant to the school setting.
  • Critically reflect upon teaching and learning experiences, including the role of the learning environment.
  • Examine and apply pedagogical approaches that can be effectively integrated into education programs to identify the cultural identity and linguistic background of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
