Aims and objectives

This unit provides students with the statistical knowledge and techniques used to evaluate performance, predictions and statistical analyses relating to sport. Contemporary sport examples are provided to illustrate relevant concepts and methodologies within the discipline area.
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Display and summarise univariate and bivariate data in a sports context using a range of graphical formats
2. Understand basic concepts in probability and the definition of probability as it applies to random events and uncertain evidence in sport
3. Apply and compare different monitoring and forecasting techniques in the context of sports performance
4. Evaluate ratings and rankings systems used in different sports
5. Construct and apply quality control monitoring charts in the context of sports performance
6. Apply different sampling techniques to acquire representative and unbiased samples
