Aims and objectives

The aim of this unit is to introduce manufacturing and engineering students to the basic principles of Quality Management. In general, Lean Practices and Six Sigma based tools and methodologies are covered with particular attention to identification of the sources of variability, continuous improvement, benchmarking and value stream mapping. Quality Systems methods are also introduced in the context of design development, risk management, design tolerances and production capability.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this Unit will be able to:

1. Interpret and execute principles of Quality Management in Industry (K3, K4, K6).

2. Propose Six Sigma Quality Systems in combination with Lean Best Practices (K2, K5, A4)

3. Describe and apply Lean Six Sigma tools to solve manufacturing and business problems. (S1, S2)

4. Select Lean Six Sigma Tools to eliminate waste in Production, identify and apply Lean Six Sigma methodologies. (S1, S2, S3)

5. Draw on the principles of Toyota Product Development System and Production System (K4,K6,A6)
