Aims and objectives

This unit explores prose poetics. Students develop an understanding of the relationship between individual elements of form, convention and meaning, as they contribute to an overall effect. This unit fosters an appreciation of traditional and experimental narrative forms, through close content analysis, textual analysis and discourse analysis. A range of contemporary narratives are analysed in order to develop a deeper understanding of prose systems and schemas.

1. Investigate and apply the conventions of prose poetics in a variety of contexts
2. Critically analyse and review texts for individual stylistic features and overall effect
3. Synthesise complex ideas into creative forms using a range of literary techniques
4. Analyse the psycholinguistic features of prose to articulate narratorial presence and purpose
