Aims and objectives

This unit examines and consolidates the understanding of neuroanatomy, neuroscience, practical clinical skills and contemporary evidence to effectively evaluate and manage neurological conditions. This unit further develops clinical reasoning and skills to assess and manage neurological conditions based on the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model utilising evidence-based outcome measures. The unit outlines the role and scope of neurological physiotherapy in the inter-disciplinary setting.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate and synthesise the research evidence that supports the assessment and management of neurological conditions.
2. Safely perform physiotherapy assessment on common neurological conditions to produce a justifiable problem list and treatment goals.
3. Use and interpret outcome measures to develop clinical reasoning in the management of common neurological disorders.
4. Effectively and safely apply and evaluate physiotherapy interventions for common neurological impairments utilising appropriate technologies.
5. Sensitively communicate clinical knowledge to patients/clients, carers and other stakeholders.
