Aims and objectives

This unit should be completed in conjunction with Industry Placement or Industry Projects. It introduces students to case study as a method for examining designers’ actions and situations in practice. Students analyse the practices, and cultural and organisational aspects of a communication design workplace. The unit seeks to create a context in which students can explore their professional identity and examine facets of their future work and career.
After successfully completing this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand of the role of concept formation and causal inference in case study research.
2. Critically reflect on communication designer’s studio practice, understanding what is common to practice and variations in practices in individual studios.
3. Understand the relationship between practice-based and theoretical knowledge in allowing practitioners to formulate what they know.
4. Engage in the comparative critical analysis of academic texts.
