Aims and objectives

This unit provides skills in CAD surface modelling techniques appropriate to product design and development processes. Students will be introduced to NURBS-based CAD software to enhance 3D ideation skills. This includes the translation of data from 3D scanning to surface models. The unit will focus on CAD software for technical surfacing, concept exploration and design visualisation. CAD skills developed will enable the development of free-form and organic shapes.
This unit will also provide an introduction to digital communication, using Adobe software to build skills for presentation of design work through photographic manipulation and digital page layout.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Identify the appropriate use of 3D CAD tools to efficiently depict free-form and organic shapes
2. Compose simple organic objects in NURBS based CAD software based on hand drawn ideation sketches
3. Apply the NURBS based CAD and modelling systems to a defined product development project
4. Use basic techniques for photographic manipulation and digital page layout to communicate design intent of a product.
