Aims and objectives

This unit aims to prepare students to plan and teach in their discipline context. In this unit, students gain knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching and learning in their subject area. All key concepts from the subject area as articulated in relevant curriculum documents will be explored; along with theoretical and practical pedagogical approaches. Students will consider the principles of effective planning and assessment in their subject area, as elements of an integrated planning and teaching cycle. Students will examine a range of assessment practices and strategies and how they relate to teaching and learning in a variety of contexts. Students will also explore feedback principles and reporting in the subject area. Students will understand the evaluation cycle and the role of assessment in planning for learning and teaching.
After successfully completing this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate and communicate an understanding of the curriculum content of the subject area.
2. Investigate pedagogical approaches in teaching and learning of the subject area in the secondary context.
3. Generate plans of lessons and units of work using the structure and content of relevant curriculum documents.
4. Compare a range of assessment strategies in terms of their purpose, benefits, limitations and implementation constraints.
5. Evaluate principles and strategies for reporting student achievement and design a range of record keeping instruments.
Demonstrate the capacity to interpret student assessment data, evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice.
