Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify the critical issues that should be addressed in planning and designing a multi-storey building (K1, K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, A1, A5, A6)
  • Undertake conceptual design for buildings covering floor layout and identify suitable lateral load resisting systems (K1, K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, A1, A5, A6)
  • Calculate wind loads on buildings focusing on external facades and execute design of glazing elements (K1, K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, A1, A5, A6)
  • Carry out design of composite concrete floors (K1, K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, A1, A5, A6)
  • Identify factors affecting seismic design of building structures and calculate seismic loads (K1, K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, A1, A5, A6)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and(ii) at least 40% in the final exam.Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.

Content

  • Conceptual design and gravity and lateral load resisting systems in tall buildings
  • Wind loads
  • Glazing façade design
  • Design of composite concrete floors for strength and serviceability
  • Introduction to structural dynamics
  • Seismic design
