Aims and objectives

This unit broadens students’ knowledge of engineering principles by identifying, analysing and evaluating technologies, simulation techniques and architectural systems. Students will then implement this newly acquired knowledge via concept and design development within a studio-based unit. This unit encourages students to interpret results and evaluate complex problems resulting in proprietary outcomes. In order for students to communicate their outcomes, they will be required to consolidate their findings from drawings, digital models and physical models and to deliver these via regular feedback sessions and assessments.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

1. Identify, analyse and evaluate relevant and existing technologies, simulation techniques and architectural systems relevant to the studio brief. (S1, K2, K3, A6)
2. Develop suitable technological and artistic skills necessary to respond to the studio brief. (K1, K3)
3. Implement and apply knowledge to iterate and refine engineering design solutions based on regular assessment and feedback. (S2, S3)
4. Develop a realistic but aspirational design proposal based on sound engineering principals, knowledge of construction and architectural design. (A4, A6)
5. Communicate solutions via high quality drawings, digital models and physical models. (A2, S4)
