Course rules

To qualify for the Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business, students must complete a total of 500 credit points as follows:

  • 12 Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Core units (150 credit points)
  • 16 Robotics and Mechatronics Major studies units (200 credit points)
  • 4 Business Core units (50 credit points) ^
  • 8 units from one of the following Business Majors: Accounting,  Business Administration, Economics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Management, Marketing (100 credit points)
  • Professional Experience in Engineering non-credit bearing unit (0 credit points)
  • Domestic students also have an opportunity to undertake a WIL Professional Placement in lieu of Professional Experience in Engineering (see below). This option is not available to international students.

^ In total there are 8 x Core Business Studies units. 4 of the 8 units are undertaken by the double degree students in this course. The remaining 4 units have been cross-credited with other Engineering units.

Students may not complete more than 150 credit points (12 units ) at Stage 1 (unit codes with a first digit of '1').

A unit of study can only be counted once. Where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternative unit.

Professional Placements (Domestic students only)

Professional Placements are subject to a competitive selection process.

Students who undertake a 12 month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 600 credit points comprising:

  • 12 Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Core units (150 credit points)
  • 16 Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Major studies units (200 credit points)
  • 4 Business Core units (50 credit points) ^
  • 8 units from one of the following Business Majors: Accounting,  Business Administration,  Economics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Management, Marketing (100 credit points)
  • 4 units of study from the Professional Placement Co-Major (100 credit points)

Students who elect to undertake a 6 month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 550 credit points comprising:

  • 12 Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Core units (150 credit points)
  • 16 Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Major studies units (200 credit points)
  • 4 Business Core units (50 credit points) ^
  • 8 units from oe of the following Business Majors: Accounting,  Business Administration, Economics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Management, Marketing (100 credit points)
  • 2 units of study from the Professional Placement Minor (50 credit points).

Honours Merit Calculation

Honours merit calculation will be based on the averaged results of 12 units in the final two years of the course with the following descriptive outcomes:

  • BEng (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Hons) / BBus with High Distinction; for students who achieve ≥ 80
  • BEng (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Hons) / BBus with Distinction; for students who achieve 70 – 79
  • BEng (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Hons) / BBus with Credit; for students who achieve 60 – 69
  • BEng (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Hons) / BBus; for students who achieve < 60

Students who transfer with advanced standing are required to undertake at least 9 of the following units at Swinburne, including all 6 Advanced Engineering units, to qualify for an honours merit calculation. This honours merit calculation will be based only on units completed at Swinburne. If a student has not completed at least 9 of the specified units, they will graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Honours) / Bachelor of Business as an award title, but not be eligible for a merit based honours description.
