In this Accounting major you’ll learn how to deliver insights that drive business outcomes while appreciating how the pursuit of profit and purpose are the foundations of future, sustainable businesses.

The major will prepare you for career opportunities in business advisory, company accounting, management accounting, financial management, financial information systems, tax and auditing.
Graduates with an Accounting major may be eligible to apply for membership of CPA Australia (CPAA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).
To be eligible for the CPA program you must also complete unit LAW20019 Law of Commerce.
Students seeking membership with overseas professional accounting bodies may need to complete additional units.

Our Bachelor of Aviation and Piloting/Bachelor of Business allows you to combine your passion for flying with business studies.
This double degree includes four units of practical professional pilot training. Training in an airline cadet pilot environment, you'll acquire a Commercial Pilot Licence with a Multi Engine Instrument Rating. For your final practical unit, you'll either undertake a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approved Multi Crew Cooperation course, or Flight Instructor rating.
In your business studies, you’ll examine business models, strategy and management principles, and be prepared for roles in modern organisations.
Work Integrated Learning is a guaranteed part of all our bachelor degrees. In this degree, in the units Aviation Research Project Part 1 and 2, you’ll work on a group project based on real industry problems faced by Qantas or Melbourne Airport.
You'll graduate with the skills to pursue a career as a flight crew member, flight instructor, or within an aviation business.

Course learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Aviation and Piloting will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent understanding and application of the body of knowledge specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) (or equivalent ICAO State regulatory body) for flight crew, including specialised knowledge required for the Air Transport Pilots Licence. The standards of a recognised safety regulatory authority shall be generally applied
- demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of Aviation Human Factors, Aviation Management and Aviation Technology to critically analyse and solve problems and implement solutions in global professional airline and aviation practice
- work autonomously and in teams within organisations with a focus on safety, quality, legality and profitability applying ethical standards with professional accountability
- plan and deliver a team-based professionally-relevant research project with some independence
- demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills in a professional aviation context
- employ an entrepreneurial approach in contributing to innovation, development and management of change within professional airline and aviation operational practice
- demonstrate both broad and specialised technical knowledge and skills within the field of professional pilot practice
- critically apply theoretical and practical skills as a professional pilot and to be able to analyse, evaluate and review to provide solutions to non-ambiguous, ambiguous and novel complex flight scenarios
- apply knowledge and skills beyond the minimum specified in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Part 61 Manual of Standards (or equivalent ICAO State regulatory body) to achieve the licencing qualification of Commercial Pilot (Aeroplane) The standards of a recognised safety regulatory authority shall be generally applied.
Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Business course will be able to:
- define and integrate theoretical principles applicable to business and apply those principles in a range of practices
- systematically review and critically evaluate research from a variety of sources in order to make informed judgments on options for innovatively solving a range of problems that arise in business contexts
- formulate creative solutions that are fit for purpose and demonstrate cognisance of the impact of business decisions on the triple bottom line
- coherently articulate a line of reasoning demonstrating cultural sensitivity and apply a framework to analyse and offer solutions to ethical dilemmas
- communicate a range of business arguments by evaluating and implementing alternative communication strategies as appropriate to the audience
- build on and continuously develop the intellectual independence to be critical and reflective learners, cognisant of new technologies
- work collaboratively in diverse groups.
Career opportunities
This course prepares students for aviation careers in the air transportation industry as professional pilots.
Professional recognition
For the Bachelor of Business as appropriate for the major specialisation undertaken.
For the Bachelor of Aviation and Piloting nil, however all delivered flying training will be done in accordance with the requirements of either the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority or any other International Civil Aviation Organisation Member state regulatory authority as appropriate to where the graduate may seek employment.
The Finance major, in the Bachelor of Business and related double degrees, is recognised under the CFA Institute Affiliated University. The course covers at least 70% of Level 1 of the CFA program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice. This recognition signals to students, employers and the marketplace that that Swinburne’s curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well suited to preparing you for employment in the finance and investment industry, and for sitting the CFA examination. Students of the Finance major may be eligible for CFA Program Student Scholarships.
