Course rules

To qualify for the Bachelor of Health Science / Bachelor of Media and Communication, students must complete 400 - 425 credit points comprising:

  • 4 core Health Science units of study (50 credit points)
  • 4 core Media and Communication units of study (50 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Health Science discipline major in one of the following: Applied Statistics; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedical and Clinical Technologies*; Health across the Lifespan; Health Communication; Neuroscience; Nutrition (100 credit points) OR 14 units of study in the Psychology and Forensic Science Professional Program major (175 credit points) OR 18 units of study in the Psychology and Psychophysiology Professional Program major (225 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Media and Communication discipline major in one of the following: Advertising; Cinema and Screen Studies; Creative Writing and Literature; Digital Advertising Technology; Games and Interactivity; Journalism; Media Industries; Public Relations; Professional Writing and Editing; Social Media (100 credit points)
  • Other studies comprising a second major, minor/s, advanced minor, or electives as applicable, (up to 100 credit points)

Domestic students also have an opportunity to undertake a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Professional Placement.

Please note that due to government regulation international students holding a student visa are not able to undertake Professional Placements in this course.

Note:

  • Students selecting the Psychology and Psychophysiology Major will be required to complete 425 credit points in this course and will not need to undertake other studies.

Due to government regulations international students holding an international student visa are not able to undertake the Psychology and Psychophysiology major.

* Note: Students selecting the Major in Biomedical and Clinical Technologies are required to have completed some prior study in Mathematics. Students who have not completed VCE Units 3 & 4 Mathematical Methods or Further Mathematics are advised to first take MTH00007 Preliminary Mathematics as an elective unit.

Students must not complete more than 150 credit points (normally 12 units) at Introductory level. The exception to this are Psychology units which must be completed for Professional accreditation.

A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternative. Where there are no available units, students will be required to complete an alternative approved cognate unit.

 

Professional Placements
Professional Placements are subject to a competitive selection process.

Students who undertake a 12-month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 475 credit points comprising:

  • 4 core Health Science units of study (50 credit points)
  • 4 core Media and Communication units of study (50 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Health Science discipline major in one of the following: Applied Statistics; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedical and Clinical Technologies*; Health across the Lifespan; Health Communication; Neuroscience; Nutrition (100 credit points) OR 14 units of study in the Psychology and Forensic Science Professional Program major (175 credit points) OR 18 units of study in the Psychology and Psychophysiology Professional Program major (225 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Media and Communication discipline major in one of the following: Advertising; Cinema and Screen Studies; Creative Writing and Literature; Digital Advertising Technology; Games and Interactivity; Journalism; Media Industries; Public Relations; Professional Writing and Editing; Social Media (100 credit points)
  • Other studies comprising a minor, advanced minor or electives (up to 75 credit points)
  • 4 units of study from the Professional Placement Co-Major (100 credit points)  

Note: Students selecting the Psychology and Psychophysiology Major will be required to complete 525 credit points in this course and will not need to undertake other studies.

* Note: Students selecting the Major in Biomedical and Clinical Technologies are required to have completed some prior study in Mathematics. Students who have not completed VCE Units 3 & 4 Mathematical Methods or Further Mathematics are advised to first take MTH00007 Preliminary Mathematics as an elective unit.

Students who elect to undertake a 6-month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 437.5 credit points comprising:

  • 4 core Health Science units of study (50 credit points)
  • 4 core Media and Communication units of study (50 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Health Science discipline major in one of the following: Applied Statistics; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedical and Clinical Technologies*; Health across the Lifespan; Health Communication; Neuroscience; Nutrition (100 credit points) OR 14 units of study in the Psychology and Forensic Science Professional Program major (175 credit points) OR 18 units of study in the Psychology and Psychophysiology Professional Program major (225 credit points)
  • 8 units of study from a Media and Communication discipline major in one of the following: Advertising; Cinema and Screen Studies; Creative Writing and Literature; Digital Advertising Technology; Games and Interactivity; Journalism; Media Industries; Public Relations; Professional Writing and Editing; Social Media (100 credit points)
  • Other studies comprising a minor, advanced minor or electives (up to 87.5 credit points)
  • 2 units of study from the Professional Placement Minor (50 credit points)
