The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) provides students with the capacity to engage in innovative approaches to teaching and learning in a secondary school, as well as the ability to reflect on the social, ethical and professional expectations that the rise of technology brings to the classroom and the nature of learning. The degree combines general education studies, teaching methods (curriculum studies), and professional experience.
Students may choose to specialise in at least two teaching disciplines including: Applied Mathematics, Chinese, Creative Writing and Literature, Information Technology, Japanese, Product Design and Technology, and Visual Communication Design. In addition, students are afforded three professional placements at a secondary school, a total of 80 days. As a result, graduates are not only qualified to teach Years 7 to 12 but also prepared as future educational leaders and innovators.

Course learning outcomes
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree is designed to produce graduates with:
- broad and coherent knowledge of students at a secondary school level, including how they learn, as well as the capacity to demonstrate initiative and judgment when making decisions and solving problems
- broad and coherent knowledge of specific secondary school content areas within the Australian context and capacity to critically review theory and practice
- the capacity to show initiative and judgment to plan for, and implement, effective teaching and learning in diverse contexts with the capacity to solve problems with intellectual independence
- the capacity to adapt knowledge and skills to critically analyse information in diverse contexts, and to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
- the capacity to assess, provide feedback and report on student learning using clear and coherent communication with the ability to critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise assessment information
- responsibility and accountability for their own learning to identify, engage in and apply professional learning, individually and in collaboration with others
- the capacity to engage professionally with colleagues, families and students, and the communication skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of a given body of knowledge and set of ideas.
Course structure
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) consists of 32 units (400 credit points). Units normally carry 12.5 credit points each. In each year, eight units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points.
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education (Secondary), students must complete 400 credit points comprising:
Education Studies (200 credit points)
- 9 x Education Studies units (112.5 credit points)
- 3 x Professional Experience units (37.5 credit points)
- 4 x Teaching Methods units: 2 x Curriculum & Methods 1 units (25 credit points) and 2 x Curriculum & Methods 2 (Advanced) units (25 credit points)
Discipline Studies (200 credit points)
- 16 x Discipline units (200 credit points) from the following options (or as approved by the course convenor).

In addition, students are responsible for arranging and successfully completing the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students through the Australian Council for Education Research after attempting 200 credit points of study.
Academic Progress – Special Requirements
In addition to the standard academic progress rules, the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) has the following additional academic progress rules which are established in accordance with Academic Courses Regulation 62(2):
1. A student is classified as 'at risk' of unsatisfactory progress if they:
(a) behave in a manner which breaches the Swinburne Student Charter whilst on a teaching placement
2. A student is classified as having 'unsatisfactory progress' if they:
(a) fail to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy test after attempting 200 credit points of studies.
(b) fail a Teaching Placement unit
(c) have their teaching placement terminated early by a school. In the case of early termination of a teaching placement by a school, the student will be deemed as having 'unsatisfactory progress' and a progress review processes will commence within 2 weeks of the cessation of the placement.
Students who are identified as having unsatisfactory progress will be subject to the show cause provisions in the Progress Review section of the Academic Progress Policy.
