The Graduate Diploma of Media and Communication provides students with a broad range of theoretical and practical skills applicable to a wide range of media activities. The course explores the media landscape, and provides skills in the practice and production of multiplatform media content. Students also gain project management and a range of generic skills that qualify them to contribute to the changing nature of work in the media industry.

Course description
The Graduate Diploma of Media and Communication provides a broad range of theoretical and practical skills valued in many sectors of the media industry. Graduates are equipped with skills to understand the media landscape, the practice and production of multiplatform media content, as well as project management and a range of generic skills that qualify them to actively contribute to the changing nature of work in the media industry.
International students in Australia who hold student visas are required to study full-time and on campus. Courses that are taught entirely online are only available to international students studying outside Australia or those in Australia who are not on a student visa. Online courses are not available to international students in Australia who hold a student visa.
Course structure
Please note that a unit of study can only be counted once. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points. In each year, eight units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points.

- critically evaluate media texts across a range of platforms to demonstrate advanced knowledge of media and communication concepts and practices

- synthesise and integrate professional, research and theoretical skills in media and communication to design and implement scholarly and practical projects

Entry requirements

Standard entry
- A recognised three-year Bachelor degree with a credit average or
- A recognised AQF level 8 qualification in a cognate area, such as the Graduate Certificate in Media and Communication
Advanced standing
On successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Media and Communication, students may be eligible to progress to the Master of Media and Communication and may be given full credit for the units completed towards the Graduate Diploma of Media and Communication.
English language requirements
Satisfactory completion of one of the following:
- Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, all skills 65%
- minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0
- TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 79 with a reading band no less than 18 and writing band no less than 20
- Pearson (PTE) minimum of 58 (no communicative skills less than 50)
- any other equivalent assessment of English language proficiency
