Course description
International students in Australia who hold student visas are required to study full-time and on campus. Courses that are taught entirely online are only available to international students studying outside Australia or those in Australia who are not on a student visa. Online courses are not available to international students in Australia who hold a student visa.
Course structure
- 6 Design core units (87.5 credit points)
- 1 Elective unit (12.5 credit points)
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Graduate Diploma of Design Strategy and Innovation is 50 credit points (normally four units)

Students must complete the following six units (87.5 credit points):

DDD40001 Studio 1: Methods for Design Research* (25 credit points)

Aims and objectives
- evaluate current practices and trends in design practice, strategy and management as they relate to social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts.
- conceptually and technically investigate and analyse complex information, problems, concepts and theory and apply them through independent research and projects on design strategy and innovation.
- use research principles and methods and communication skills to interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and outcomes to an industry standard.
- apply critical thinking in planning, problem-solving and decision-making during design projects.
- analyse and demonstrate the integration of design thinking, design management, strategy, systems and complexity thinking, innovation processes, futures forecasting, leadership and sustainability.

Professional recognition
Upon completion of this qualification students may be eligible to become a member of the Design Institute of Australia, Australian Graphic Design Association or Design Management Institute but should confirm eligibility with the organisation.

Entry requirements

English language requirements
Satisfactory completion of one of the following:
- Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, all skills 65%
- minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0
- TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 79 with a reading band no less than 18 and writing band no less than 20
- Pearson (PTE) minimum of 58 (no communicative skills less than 50)
- any other equivalent assessment of English language proficiency
