Professional accreditation 

The inclusion of the 7 Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) units equip and prepare students with necessary knowledge to enter the workforce. Students in Diploma of Accounting and Finance have the option to sit for an external paper to qualify for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Diploma in Accounting and Business (DIAB) and possibly further into CAT. Students completed the Diploma of Accounting and Finance can obtain a fast track pathway to earn the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) designation, by completing:

  • 1 of the DIAB papers,
  • 2 of the 3 CAT Specialist papers,
  • the Foundations in Professionalism (FiP) online test, and
  • the Foundations Practical Experience Requirement (FPER) – one year experience.

Admissions

Successful completion of an Australian Year 11 or international equivalent

OR

Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including Certificates IV (completed), Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Degrees).

Successful completion of Australian Year 12, or equivalent overseas qualification.

Course prerequisites

Minimum entry requirements stipulated by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency:

A student must meet one of the 5 options below to meet the minimum entry requirements which are in accordance with the Malaysian education system and are stipulated by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for Diploma level courses in the Accounting discipline:

  • A pass in SPM (or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 credits including Mathematics, and a pass in English; OR
  • A pass in Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or its equivalent, with a minimum of Grade C (GP 2.0) in any subject, and credits in Mathematics and a pass in English at SPM level; OR
  • A pass in Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) with a minimum grade of Maqbul (pass) and credits in Mathematics and a pass in English at SPM level; OR
  • A pass in SKM Level 3 in a related field and a pass in SPM with a minimum of 1 credit in any subject with credits in Mathematics and a pass in English; OR
  • Successful completion of an approved tertiary qualified Certificate award at Level 3 of the Malaysian Qualifications Framework.

English language requirements

Satisfactory completion of one of the following:

  • IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0
  • Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 4 Upper Intermediate level) with overall 65%, all skills 60%
  • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 65 with no band less than 15
  • Pearson (PTE) minimum score of 42 (no communicative skills less than 36)
  • or equivalent measures available at English language requirements.

Course structure

The Diploma of Accounting and Finance is a Higher Education Diploma offered at Swinburne Sarawak and the duration is typically 5 semesters/2.5 years of full-time study. The course structure requires the successful completion of 18 core units of study plus one Malaysian MoE Compliance units. The Diploma of Accounting and Finance is a Level 5 in the Australian Qualifications Framework. Admission to the program is normally based on secondary and/or tertiary academic results. This course can be undertaken full-time or part-time which includes lectures and tutorials.

Eligibility for VET student loans (VSL)

If you apply for a VET Student Loan, Swinburne must first verify your identity. If you are eligible, we will provide your enrolment information to the government so you can complete the application within their eCAF system.

The VET Student Loan amount for this course is capped. You must start repaying this loan once you earn above the compulsory repayment threshold.

If you’re enrolling in a Certificate IV-level program or below, are eligible for a government-subsidised training place and hold a valid concession card, you may be eligible for a concession of 80 per cent off the published fee of your unit(s) tuition – which means you’ll only be charged 20 per cent of the published fee.
