The Certificate IV in Disability provides students with the skills and knowledge to work effectively with people with disabilities in a range of services. Students learn how to develop and implement programs that empower people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance and wellbeing. Students will be equipped with the skills to work in residential group homes, training resource centres, day respite centres, other community settings and clients’ homes.

Course description

This Certificate IV in Disability is ideal for those who want to work with people with disabilities in a range of services in both residential and community-based settings.

You'll gain the skills and knowledge required to assist in empowering people with disabilities to be more independent, and participate in community and recreational activities, whilst ensuring a client-centred approach.

Study areas include person-centred practice; facilitating community participation; recognising healthy body systems; and, legal and ethical compliance.

Course structure

To be awarded this qualification, students need to complete 14 units, including 11 core and 3 electives, and successfully complete a practical placement of 120 hours.

Graduate skills

On completion of this qualification, graduates will be expected to be able to design and deliver programs that enhance the wellbeing of people with disabilities, work without supervision and may be required to supervise or co-ordinate a small team.

Applicants require a minimum of completion of Year 12 or equivalent.

Non school leavers without formal qualifications are welcome to apply.

• Over the age of 18 years old

• Have a valid Working With Children Check (or be prepared to obtain this prior to placements)

• Have a valid Police Check (or be prepared to obtain this prior to placements)

• Literacy and Numeracy: applicants will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy competencies

• Have a valid National Disability Insurance Scheme Screening Check (or be prepared to obtain this prior to placements)

• Appropriate vaccinations - Students must be able to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19
