Dr Nicholas Reynolds

Biography

I am interested in the development of biomaterials, biomedical devices, and the molecular processes underpinning protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

I obtained a PhD from The University of Sheffield (UK) on the site-specific nanoscale patterning of functional proteins by scanning near-field photolithography (SNP).

After my PhD I undertook a position at the University of Zurich (CH), where I showed that amyloid forming proteins interact with neuronal membrane mimicking supported lipid bilayers resulting in aggregation and bilayer damage, providing valuable insight into the mechanisms of neuron death in Parkinson’s disease.

My position at CSIRO was funded by fellowships from the Swiss National Science Foundation awarded to promising early career researchers. My research at CSIRO investigated applications of nano-fiberous materials formed from self-assembled proteins and peptides. These materials were used as both biomaterials and model systems to better understand protein aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

I am currently employed as a Research Scientist in the ARC Training Centre for Biodevices at Swinburne University of Technology. My roles include supervision of PhD students and developing collaborative research projects with Australian bio and med tech companies and academics.
