After graduating from Melbourne University, Neville commenced his career as an educator at the tertiary level. He joined Swinburne Institute of Technology (later to become Swinburne University of Technology), and within a short period became Head of the Accounting School. During this period, Neville was active in ensuring the reputation of the school was maintained and enhanced.
He co-authored a textbook in Accounting, which was used for many years by other Universities and Institutes of Technology. The objectives of Swinburne as an educational institution, included close links with industry. Neville became a business and educational consultant to companies such as BP, Mobil and Shell. Testimony to his success was the fact that he served BP for approximately nineteen (19) continuous years in financial training.
Neville joined the Graduate School of Entrepreneurship as team leader in Finance in 2001 and has maintained a reputation for excellent teaching in finance. He gained a Swinburne University award for teaching excellence. Neville is currently responsible for the syllabus in finance for the MBA programme. He continued to provide short courses for industry conducting programmes Australia wide .Until recently, Neville conducted approximately 10-13 short courses per annum. He recently conducted the Swinburne Executive Education programme in Accounting and Finance
In summary over the past forty years Neville has held senior management positions within Swinburne’s Faculty of Business and the School of Commerce. Although regularly acting at high levels of responsibility in the organisation, Neville chose on a number of occasions to continue teaching, external consulting and academic development rather than remaining in the field of Faculty/School administration. He brings a broad balance of experience across all levels of educational operations.
In Swinburne’s current environment of teaching based on “Blended Learning” and” On-line Education” Neville responded to the challenge to keep Swinburne to the forefront of these activities. Neville has written numerous Lecturer Notes, Cases studies, Solutions and made over thirty Videos on various accounting and finance topics. Neville has been acknowledged for soundly based education methods included in his Blackboard Sites. A similar reaction has occurred at Swinburne Online where again Neville’s sites are used as exemplars. MBA students have consistently ranked Neville as an Outstanding Educator as evidenced by Swinburne’s Evaluation Services
A reference from Peter Fitzgerald, a former Mobil executive, includes the following:
“Neville’s strengths have been in his ability to relate well with all levels of management, his design and delivery expertise in financial problem solving and analysis, building relevant case studies and providing overall consulting skills to enhance management in the areas of accounting and finance. Feedback sheets have invariably supported a superior level of performance in all the assignments in which he has been associated.”
