Biography

Karen Farquharson is Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Health, Arts and Design. Karen is a sociologist with research interests in the areas of diversity, 'race' and ethnic relations, the media, and sport. Her current research projects explore: news media representations of racialised minorities and responses to those representations; and how junior sports clubs manage diversity. She has previously held the positions of Associate Dean (Research & Development) and Head, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Swinburne. Prior to working at Swinburne, Karen was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Public Policy at the University of Melbourne. She holds Masters and PhD degrees from Harvard University in sociology and a Bachelors degree in social science from the University of California, Berkeley.
