Biography

Professor Paul Latimer researches and publishes in the commercial law area including financial services and securities regulation, and regularly speaks at conferences including the annual Cambridge Symposium on Economic Crime. His research in the area of whistleblowing and carbon markets has been supported by two research grants from the ARC.

His textbook Australian Business Law of about 1100 pages (CCH Australia Ltd and later Oxford University Press), published annually for 35 editions from 1981 to 2016, was presented with an award by the publisher for the 25th annual edition for 'the most successful business law text in Australian publishing history'.

Paul has degrees from UNSW, LLB and LLM from the University of Sydney and a PhD from Monash University in the area of promoting disclosure in financial markets. He joined Swinburne Law School from the Monash Business School at Clayton.

Paul has been a visiting scholar in securities regulation at several overseas universities including Columbia University in New York, NYU, the University of Cambridge (Wolfson College), KU Leuven, the University of Malaya, Laval University and the University of Montreal in Canada.  During periods of outside studies leave he was on secondment at ASIC (and its predecessors) and at the Attorney General's Department in Canberra.

Paul teaches in the commercial law area, including stock exchange and derivatives law, and banking and finance law.

He is a sessional tribunal member, and also works as a pro bono solicitor and has worked as a pro bono migration agent.
