Associate Professor Colleen Murrell researches international newsgathering, public interest journalism, transnational broadcasting, social media, analytics and new technology, and global news agencies. She teaches mostly in broadcast subjects. Colleen has recently joined Swinburne from Monash University. Before becoming an academic, she worked for a number of international news organisations including the BBC, ITN, Associated Press, SBS and the ABC as a producer, reporter and news editor. She travelled widely as a field producer throughout the Middle East and Europe.

Colleen received a PhD in Media and Communications form the University of Melbourne (2011). Her thesis was turned into a book published by Routledge (2015) called 'Foreign Correspondents and International Newsgathering: The Role of Fixers.' Colleen's research is published widely in national and international journals. She has been the recipient of internationally competitive research fellowships at The London School of Economics and Political Science (2015), The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford (2011) and City University in London (2007). She is the Vice President (Networks) of the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies.
