The OLC is being set up to support this student cohort, providing students with a high-quality online learning experience that incorporates a physical learning space with extra supports from learning facilitators.

Swinburne coursework students who currently remain in China are welcome to complete Semester 2 2021 studies at the China OLC located at:

Shandong University of Science and Technology, Jinan Campus
山东科技大学济南校区

Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST), founded in 1951, offers multidisciplinary education in engineering, science, management, literature, law, economics and education with unique engineering characteristics. It is a key construction university of Shandong Province for producing graduates with advanced practical abilities. It is co-built by Shandong Provincial People's Government and the former State Administration of Work Safety.

The University now has three campuses — Qingdao, Tai’an and Jinan — covering a total area of 253 hectares with a space of 1.46 million square meters. The total value of fixed assets of the university is RMB 3.015 billion and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is RMB 796 million. The Swinburne Overseas Learning Centre will be based at the Jinan campus.

How to apply

Step 1:

Complete the registration form to express your interest in applying for the OLC program. 

Step 2:

Eligible students will receive an invitation from Swinburne to submit an official OLC application.

Step 3: 

Once successful the OLC registration and deposit payment will then be required to confirm your place within the program.
Note: Limited spaces are available and will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for the OLC?

The OLC is open to students who are enrolled in Swinburne coursework programs that are available for online delivery, including ELICOS, Foundation, UniLink, PQP, UG and PG.

Are all students who have decided to study courses in the 2021 second intake in China required to register at OLC?

No. Students can choose to continue studying online at home; however, students will benefit from extra learning supports if joining the OLC. 

If the travel ban in Australia changes and students wish to return to Melbourne for the rest of the semester, can students terminate their study at the OLCs at any time?

Yes, students can stop learning at an OLC and return to their Melbourne campus without penalty.

Are there any differences in timetables, teaching modes, learning materials and assessment modes at the OLCs in China compared to studying at home or at the Melbourne campus?

Teaching settings (including materials, timetables, assessment modes) in each online delivery unit will be provided in the same way to all students enrolled in the unit, regardless of study locations. Students at the OLC will receive additional face-to-face consultation and academic supports from learning facilitators. 

Can students who have been enrolled at an OLC still apply for a visa to Australia?

Yes, students can submit visa applications while they are studying at the OLC.

For new students, do they need a valid Australian student visa before they can enrol at the OLC?

An Australian student visa is not required for enrolling at the OLC. 

Which courses will be supported at the OLC?

All courses offered via online delivery mode in Semester 2 2021 (academic year) will be supported at the OLC.

How many subjects can I enrol in?

Students is encouraged to follow study plan suggested by the CAS team.

What are the working hours for the learning facilitators and support staff at the OLCs?

The hours are 5am to 10pm China time (GMT+8). Students can have individual consultations or communicate with the facilitators and support staff via WeChat or emails during working hours.

Can I use the facilities and learning resources offered at the OLCs in China?

Yes, students will have access to study area, libraries, computer labs, accommodation, as well as dining and social areas on campus.

If students choose to study at an OLC, will the university where the OLC is located arrange for the use of on-campus dormitories?

The OLCs will arrange accommodation for students on campus.

What is the cost of the dormitory at these OLCs?

The cost of on-campus housing at the OLCs is RMB 3,000 per semester for female rooms (twin-shared with ensuite) and RMB 1,800 per semester for male rooms (twin-shared without ensuite).

Do I need to pay additional fees to join the OLC?

OLC academic supports are provided to students with no additional cost. Students are responsible for cost of accommodation, living expenses, insurance, COVID test and health check-up (if required by SDUST).

Will students live with other Swinburne students?

Yes, students will be accommodated with other Swinburne students.

Is there a difference in tuition fees between OLC students and non-OLC students in China?

Tuition fees for the same course or unit will have no difference between studying at the OLC or online from home. Additional learning supports are provided to OLC students with no extra cost.

Will the Swinburne LinkedIn Scholarship (30 percent) or Swinburne International Excellence Scholarship (30–75 percent) still be accessible if students enrol at an OLC?

Enrolling in OLC has no impact on students’ eligibility in receiving the LinkedIn Scholarship or the International Excellence Scholarship (if applicable).

If the Australian government lifts the travel restrictions in the middle of the second semester, will Swinburne close the OLCs?

The OLC will be open throughout the semester, regardless of the travel restriction status.

Can I terminate my enrolment at the OLCs if the travel restriction is lifted?

Yes, students can choose to terminate their enrolments at the OLC and return to Melbourne campus without penalty.
