Design Special Collection

The Design Special Collection is a collection of historical source material and contemporary design related material that traces the history of modernist design in Australia in the first half of the 20th century. It includes journals, leaflets and ephemera on Australian art, architecture, interior design, fashion, costume, performing arts, circus, graphic arts and industrial design plus design tools such as colour charts and samples of printed objects in unusual format.


The collection is located on level 4 of the Hawthorn library. Material may be used only in the library and is not available for loan. Please ask staff at the library service desk for access. Watch the video to find out how to access the Design Special Collection.


Digitisation project

Swinburne Library is digitising selected material from the collection. You can view digital flipbooks of early editions of The Home AnnualDecoration and GlassThe Australian National Journal and more. Access is only available to current Swinburne staff and students.
