Lunchtime Webinar - CBT for Pandemic-Related Anxiety and Depression in Youth: An evidence-informed treatment model
The rapidly evolving nature of the COVID-19 crisis means that best-practice principles for working with pandemic-related anxiety and depression in youth have yet to be established. A group of clinicians at the Swinburne Psychology Clinic have developed a research-informed treatment model for pandemic-related psychological problems in youths aged 13–18.
The treatment model consists of:
- assessment strategies for examining COVID-19 related fears
- psychometric assessment of the psychological risk factors that place youth at risk of pandemic-related anxiety
- behaviour activation to reverse the depressogenic effects of a low-reinforcement lockdown environment
- psychoeducation tailored to the current COVID-19 crisis
- cognitive therapy and problem solving strategies, and
- developmentally sensitive principles including family and systemic strategies.
The purpose of the presentation is to give clinicians (e.g., counsellors, social workers, psychologists, GPs, OTs, psychiatrists, and school-based wellbeing staff) an overview of the treatment model to help inform their current practice with youth during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.
