About the lecture

Swinburne and the National Centre for Reconciliation Practice are delighted to welcome Mr Richard Young, a prominent Indigenous artist based in Victoria, to deliver the 2023 Swinburne Annual Reconciliation Lecture.

Richard descends from First Nations peoples from across Victoria – Lake Condah in the West, Mooroopna in the North and Gippsland to the South and the East.

He is an advocate for increasing the understanding of knowledge focusing on the distinct difference between community groups and traditional forms of cultural structures. Together with his wife Judith, their children and extended family members, they deliver Spirit of the Brand workshops from their Warrandyte studios and continue to educate and bridge fragmented societies.

In 2017, Richard started painting to visualise his life. His style of art or genre has been classified as abstract expressionist, contemporary abstract art. His work has been collected by the Gippsland Regional Art Gallery and private family collectors.

In 2021, he joined McGuire Media and JAMTV in a new role as Dhadyan – Clever Man in his Gunnai language. He is leading JAMTV’s Indigenous Engagement and Professional Development strategy to ensure JAMTV is growing in our underpinning knowledge and understanding of the cultural, political, social and economic landscape that impacts Indigenous people across Australia.

Richard is currently contracted with the Level Crossings Removal Projects implementing his Spirit of the Brand cultural immersion program and Songlines strategy for cultural change and Aboriginal family engagement.

Pre-lecture refreshments will be served at 5pm with the lecture commences at 6pm.

This lecture will also be livestreamed for those who register. The link will be sent in a reminder prior to the lecture.
