Get the skills and info you need to thrive at uni with this series of specially curated multi-day workshops.
Swinburne's Student Essentials Program runs over three days and features a mix of in-person and online sessions.
- Tuesday 19 July, Day 1: Welcome – including First Year Mingle on-campus event
- Wednesday 20 July, Day 2: Intro to Study
- Thursday 21 July, Day 3: Wellbeing Edition
Each session provides you with practical resources and helps you understand the support services available to you as a Swinburne student.
You’ll also pick up a few life hacks – like how to stay motivated – and leave with a booster shot of confidence.
Is this right for me?
The Student Essentials Program is designed for students starting an undergraduate (bachelor) degree for the first time – whether you're new to university or returning to study after a break.
How do I get involved?
Browse the workshop schedule then use the form on this page to register your attendance. Registration is essential for on-campus sessions.
You can attend as many sessions as you like. Be sure to note whether your preferred sessions are on campus or online.

Workshop schedule
Tuesday 19 July, Day 1: Welcome
Day 1 will be held on campus at Level 3, Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC) and online via Microsoft Teams.
Don't forget to register.
Note: the First Year Mingle is an on-campus, in-person event only.
Meet other new students over a free morning tea in a relaxed setting. Join us on Level 3, Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre, Hawthorn campus.
We'll welcome you to the program, give essential info about starting at uni and explain the support services available.
An opportunity to ask questions to a panel of student leaders and representatives from our support services.
Tips and info for mature age students, and a chance to ask questions that relate to your situation.
A session for international students to ask questions, find support and learn about life at Swinburne.
Wednesday 20 July, Day 2: Intro to Study
Day 2 will be held online via Microsoft Teams.

Learn tips about time management, alleviating stress and starting uni on the right foot with Academic Development Advisors.
Get essential info to help you transition into uni and find out how to access Learning and Academic Skills services.
Discover how best to utilise the library and access info to ace your assigments.
The Professional Purpose and Emerging Leader teams explain how their services can help you get ahead in your studies and future career.
Student panel, skills and support to become employable. Learn how our Employability team will help guide you towards your career throughout your studies.
Thursday 21 July, Day 3: Wellbeing Edition
Day 3 will be held on campus at Level 3, Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC) and online via Microsoft Teams.

Everyone encounters challenges, this session normalises asking for help, explores motivation and when to log off, and even how to cook on a student budget.
Explore mindfulness techniques that can help you manage the pressures of study.
Uncover good and not-so-good ways of coping with pressure and burnout, the importance of balance, healthy learning mindset and identifying unhelpful thinking patterns.
