Privileged female Migration from the Global South to the Global North.

A one-hour seminar including 15 minutes for discussion - an ethnographic case study of relatively privileged Colombian female migrants living in Melbourne, Australia.

Literature on relatively privileged female migrants from the Global South migrating to the Global North is scarce. However, with changing visa regimes more and more relatively privileged and high skilled women from the Global South move for reasons such as work, education, personal development or an adventure to countries of the Global North. Focusing on the life stories of three middle- to upper-class and white Colombian female migrants living in Melbourne, Australia this presentation traces how privilege unfolds transnationally. Focusing on privilege in female migration highlights the variety of experiences of women that migrate and sheds light on how migration shapes their social position and multiple identities.
