Wear purple and change lives ‌

At Swinburne, we're committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for our LGBTI community.

Staff are encouraged to wear purple clothing or accessories on Friday 30 August to show young LGBTI people they are loved, supported and empowered to bring their whole self to life.

How to get involved

1. Wear purple

Please wear purple clothes or purple accessories to celebrate LGBTI youth.

2. Host a purple event and fundraise

Staff are invited to host a gold-coin morning tea or lunch and raise funds to help support at-risk LGBTI youth. Please donate to Wear It Purple.

3. Start a conversation.

Visibility is great, but it’s even better when it’s combined with meaningful conversation and action.

4. Book a workshop

We offer in-house training modules on LGBTI Awareness and Ally Network training, free of charge, for individuals and teams at our Croydon, Hawthorn, Prahran and Wantirna campuses.
Email AllyNetwork@swin.edu.au for more information.

5. Learn more

Visit the LGBTIQ+ Inclusion at Swinburne intranet page to learn more about inclusion and diversity framework and our goal of being recognised as a leader in LGBTIQ+ inclusion through employing people of diverse sexes, sexual orientations, and gender identities.

A man and a woman wear purple clothes and hold rainbow flags.

Why purple?

Each colour of the rainbow flag has a special meaning. The rainbow’s purple stripe represents ‘spirit’. In other parts of the world, this day is known as “Spirit Day”.

By celebrating the spirit of LGBTIQ young people, we let them know they’re valued, supported, and loved – that they’re allowed to be proud of who they are. By always letting them know they’re loved, we can build their confidence and improve their mental health, and support organisations that help LGBTIQ youth all year round.
