I heard about the Assistant 3D Visualisation Specialist placement opportunity at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) from my tutor, who suggested it would be a great way to develop my skills.

Through my placement, I had the privilege of working on a range of state-wide government projects, and the different requirements of each project meant I developed my graphic design and 3D modelling skills. It’s a great feeling to see the infographics and diagrams I made contributing to important projects.

Swinburne design student, Joanna, on professional placement at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

  • "I gained a huge amount of experience working under pressure. I learnt how to deliver work professionally while meeting deadlines, which is an important skill to learn as a designer."

    Joanna , Bachelor of Design

Working under such intense timeframes took some getting used to after having 13 weeks to complete a project for university, but it’s been worth the learning curve. I’ve also learnt a range of super handy tips and tricks in Adobe Illustrator [graphic design software], which has made my work life so much easier.

I can’t wait to graduate from my degree, throw myself out into the design world and begin making an impact the way I have at DELWP. All I see are exciting times ahead.

I’d 100 per cent recommend that everyone tries to complete a professional placement. The experience is invaluable and gives you a massive insight into the world of work.
