Overview

The Swinburne Law School has a unique legal curriculum with one of its emphasis being the Transnational Lawyering Program. This study tour is the introductory element of this academic, student mobility and research program.

The unit immerses our students within the legal culture of our nearest northern neighbour, Indonesia. More generally, this learning experience acts as an introduction to Asian legal systems and cultures more generally.

Candi Borobudur, Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia.

Benefits

You will learn about Indonesia’s rich legal and political environment and this experience provides an entrée into the broader Asian region. The aim is to provide you with an immersive introduction into Indonesia’s legal culture. You will undertake this learning experience through spending two weeks in-country visiting Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta and the regional city of Yogyakarta, a sultanate and university town in Java.

Highlights/tentative itinerary

The first week of the program is spent in Jakarta. During this period, you will visit several research sites, including transnational law firms, courts, government departments, police stations and Mega Kuningan (a private commercial district in the heart of the city).

During the second week in Yogyakarta, you will be able to investigate local lived realities through visiting historical sites, religious schools and local communities. These research sites allow you to engage with the Indonesian state and transnational legal cultures in Jakarta and then investigate local communities in Yogyakarta.
