Jobs and careers support for international students
As an international student you can access a range of support services to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to make you employment ready so you can establish a successful career upon graduation.
We will help you become a strong communicator, team player and problem solver and to develop other qualities employers are looking for.
We also run events and activities, including Job Club, which helps you find part-time work while you study.
If you are in Australia on an approved student visa, you are allowed to work, but you and your dependents:
- cannot start working until your course has started
- cannot work more than 40 hours per fortnight during your course, including exam periods, unless otherwise granted permission by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Your Tax File Number (TFN)
A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique number issued to you by the Australian Taxation Office. You need this form of identification to work in Australia.
It’s not compulsory to give your TFN to an employer, but we recommend it as without one you will pay too much tax.
A TFN also makes it easier to:
- start or change jobs
- make tax enquiries
- lodge an income tax return
- limit the tax you pay if you have investments.
Your TFN is valuable. Don’t share it with friends and don’t provide it on the internet when applying for work. Keep it secure.
