Extending your VET FEE-HELP for 2018

If you accessed VET FEE-HELP in 2017 and are continuing your studies, you may be able to extend your VET FEE-HELP assistance in 2018 under new arrangements outlined by the Australian Government.

You may be eligible if:

  • you opted-in to access VET FEE-HELP in 2017 for your Swinburne course;
  • you accessed VET FEE-HELP in 2017 for that course and completed a subject in 2017; and,
  • you meet one or more of the exceptional circumstance criteria.

Exceptional circumstances are reasons why you could not complete your study in 2017 and may include:

  • Part-time study
  • Course is longer than 12-months full-time duration
  • Provider closure and the activation of tuition assurance
  • Illness or accident
  • Carer responsibilities or adverse change in personal or family circumstances

How do I apply? 

If we think you may be eligible to continue accessing VET FEE-HELP in 2018, we will send you an email with further information by 3 November 2017.

If you wish to apply to extend your VET FEE-HELP for 2018, it is important that you reply to this email including your Student ID and letting us know which of the exceptional circumstances applies to you. Swinburne will then assess your eligibility.

If you do meet eligibility criteria, we will provide your details to the government via their eCAF system.

The government will then send an invitation to your personal email address asking you to complete the online VET FEE-HELP Grandfathering – 2018 Extension – Application form.You will be provided a link and a unique code to access this form in the eCAF system.

Key dates

30 November 2017

Let us know if you wish to apply for an extension of your VET FEE-HELP as soon as possible and, if eligible, complete the VET FEE-HELP Grandfathering – 2018 Extension – Application form by 30 November 2017 to make sure your 2018 fees are deferred.

31 January 2018

This is the last date you can submit your VET FEE-HELP Grandfathering – 2018 Extension – Application form. The government will not accept applications after this date.

VET FEE-HELP Opt-in for 2017 study

From 1 January 2017, the government introduced a new loan scheme for vocational education students called VET Student Loans (to replace VET FEE-HELP). However, instead of completely discontinuing VET FEE-HELP, the government gave students with existing VET FEEā€‘HELP loans the opportunity to opt-in to continue to access VET FEE-HELP for study during 2017 in the same course or replacement course.

The cut-off date for the 2017 VET FEE-HELP Opt-in process was 31 March 2017.

Government loans for new students

From 1 January 2017, the government introduced a new loan scheme for vocational education students called VET Student Loans (to replace VET FEE-HELP loans).
