CHANGE OF
PREFERENCE EXPO

Monday 17 December
10am – 3pm

An option for every ATAR

Your future isn’t defined by your ATAR. (And neither are you!)

Congratulations! If you achieved a higher ATAR than you expected you can a) give yourself a pat on the back and b) take some time to consider your options.

If you’re happy with the course preferences you have already put in and achieved an ATAR equal to or higher than the published Guaranteed ATAR (and you meet all the other entry requirements) then you’ll be guaranteed an offer. (Go you!) There’s no need to change anything and you can go about your well-earned freedom with a skip in your step.

If your ATAR is equal to or higher than the published Minimum ATAR for the course (including adjustment factors like SEAS) you’ll be considered for a place, but an offer isn’t guaranteed.

Try our handy ATAR calculator to work out the scores you need.

If you’ve changed your mind since receiving your higher-than-expected ATAR, you may want to update your preference list by adding courses you hadn’t considered before. This might include a professional or double degree.

If you fulfil the below criteria, you’ll automatically be offered a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship and entry into the High Achievers Program.

  • Preference a Swinburne degree
  • Be a Year 12 student and planning on commencing a Swinburne degree in 2019
  • Achieve a minimum ATAR of 95.00
  • Meet the prerequisites of your chosen degree

Got questions or want more advice on what to do? Come to our Change of Preference Expo on Monday 17 December, 10am – 3pm.

Congratulations! The nervous wait is over.

Chances are if your ATAR is what you expected, you won’t need to change your preferences. If your ATAR is equal to or higher than the published Guaranteed ATAR (and you meet all the other entry requirements) then you’ll be guaranteed an offer.

If your ATAR is equal to or higher than the published Minimum ATAR for the course (including adjustment factors like SEAS) you’ll be considered for a place, but an offer isn’t guaranteed.

Have a play with our ATAR calculator to work out the scores you need.

Don’t panic. While your results may not be what you were hoping for, there are always ways to get to where you want to go. Your career dreams don’t have to change just because your ATAR has. At Swinburne, you’ll find options for every ATAR.

Why not consider courses that have similar outcomes to your preferred course? So if your first preference is a professional degree (e.g Bachelor of Business (Professional)), you could add a general degree as your next preference (e.g Bachelor of Business), which also gives you the opportunity to complete a professional placement.

Or, you could consider a course that gives you alternative entry to your preferred course. We call this a ‘pathway’. Think of it as taking a slight detour, or a different route, to the same destination.

Complete a UniLink diploma, associate degree or advanced diploma, diploma or certificate and you can then progress into a bachelor degree.

Come to our Change of Preference Expo on Monday 17 December, 10am- 3pm to chat to someone about your course options and preferences.

Of course! That’s exactly what our Change of Preference Expo is for.

You can ask questions and chat one-on-one with the experts about your preferences. Whether your ATAR was higher, lower, or just as you expected, we’ll talk you through all your options.

Register now.

You certainly can. In fact, you can change your mind as many times as you like during the Change of Preference period at no cost as long as you pay attention to the dates listed on the VTAC website.

The first window closes at 4pm on 15th December for international students and 12pm on 19th December for local students.

One thing to keep in mind – the order you put your preferences in is really important. Be sure to put your dream course first rather than just the one with the highest ATAR (unless that’s also your dream course, in which case go right ahead!)

It’s also worth checking if any of the courses you’re preferencing have any additional requirements so you’re not caught short at the last minute.

Feeling confused? Don’t be! Come to our Change of Preference Expo and we’ll answer any questions.

You’ve had a lot on your plate. We get it. The good news is that it’s not too late to put in your preferences. You’ve got until 7th December at 5pm to put in your preferences as a ‘very late application’. The not-so-good news? It will cost you $137.

Check out the VTAC website for more info.

We’re glad you asked. Free TAFE for Priority Courses is a Victorian Government Initiative that will pay your tuition fees, if eligible, to study one of 20 non-apprenticeship courses and 17 apprenticeship pathway courses from 1 January 2019. These include the Diploma of Nursing, Certificate IV in Engineering and Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pre-apprenticeship) among others.

You may be eligible if you are:

  • under 20 years old, or
  • enrolling in a course at a higher level than you have completed before.

If you don’t fit in to either of these categories, you could still have a chance! There are other eligibility factors too. Check out our handy explainer for more details.

Great question! VTAC uses your VCE results to calculate your ATAR. It’s based on:

  • Your study score for English, English Language, Literature or English (EAL);
  • Your next three highest permissible study scores
  • 10 per cent of your next two permissible study scores (if available)

Completed Year 12 outside of Victoria? VTAC will automatically receive your results and ranks from the state in which you studied. All non-Victorian educational authorities (except Queensland) provide you with an ATAR.

A study score is your result for a subject numbered between zero and 50, with 50 being the highest score possible.

It’s calculated by combining the standardised score for each of your graded assessments based on their weighting, compared to the scores of all other students who took that subject, then converted into a score out of 50.

A certain study score is often a prerequisite for courses.

It depends what you’re hoping to study next year! Your first step is to check the VTAC website for your preferred Swinburne course and clarify any entry requirements. If it’s listed through VTAC, then preference it as normal! If your preferred Swinburne certificate, diploma or pre-apprenticeship is not listed on the VTAC website, then you can apply to us directly. We won’t bite (promise.)

You’ll hear two types of ATARs being talked about – a Guaranteed ATAR and Minimum ATAR. If you achieve an ATAR that is equal to or higher than a published Guaranteed ATAR, AND meet all other entry requirements, congrats – you’ll be guaranteed an offer!

If your ATAR is below a Guaranteed ATAR and you meet all other entry requirements, your application will still be considered but you’re not guaranteed an offer.

Got questions or want to talk options if this happens? Come to our Change of Preference Expo.

If you achieve an ATAR (including adjustment factors such as SEAS) that meets a published Minimum ATAR, you will be considered for a place, but an offer isn’t guaranteed. Unfortunately, if your adjusted ATAR is below this minimum then you won’t be considered.

(But don’t worry – there are always ways to get to where you want to go! Speak to us about your options.)

Remember – some courses may have additional requirements or selection criteria. Make sure you check the VTAC website for full entry requirements.

Adjustment factors are things that Swinburne take into consideration when considering your application. They don’t alter your ATAR but they do increase your chance of receiving an offer from us to study a particular course by boosting your selection ranking.

These include:

  • Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)
  • Subject adjustments
    • These are granted for particular Year 12 units that are relevant to the selected course. Visit the VTAC course listing for the full list
  • Early Leaders Program
    • If you’ve completed at least one award category in our Early Leaders Program as part of your Year 11 studies, you’ll be automatically awarded adjustment factors
  • Regional
    • Regional adjustments will be applied to all Swinburne applicants from outer regional and remote communities, where Year 12 is the highest level of study

Want to see how these could affect you? Check out our SEAS and Adjustment Factor Calculator.

Firstly, don’t worry! Your life isn’t over just because you didn’t get the ‘right’ number on a piece of paper. You’ve still got plenty of options.

These include studying a UniLink diploma at Swinburne, which means you can pathway into a bachelor degree once you’ve completed it – and get up to a year’s worth of credit!

Come to our Change of Preference Expo to talk through all your options.

Go you! if you preference a Swinburne degree, receive an offer from us, and you score an ATAR of 95 or higher this year, you’ll be automatically be offered a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship plus entry into the High Achievers Program.

We also offer other scholarships that you can apply for. See the full list on offer. You could be eligible for one so it pays to have a look!
