There are a number of workshops and training programs run by Swinburne University departments that may help you overcome your personal or study difficulties. The workshops run by Student Services can help you with some common student difficulties, such as managing your study load and preparing for exams. The Swinburne Psychology Clinic also runs occasional community programs for specific mental health difficulties, such as social anxiety. Details of the various workshops and community programs currently running at Swinburne are listed below, and can also be found on the relevant department websites.
Every semester the Counselling Service offers
a series of free workshops in which students learn strategies
to deal effectively with personal concerns.
Choose from a list of 6 different academic success
program workshops. Included within each workshop are downloads
to tips, checklists and other information.
Ideal for prospective students. Hear a mature
age student perspective, hear about Swinburne's support services
and have concerns and questions answered.
MMEG is a low-cost group counselling program
for people experiencing difficulties in controlling their eating
behaviour. The group caters for anyone who would like to better
understand and control their eating behaviour and offers a psychological
approach to: emotions and eating behaviour; body image; building
support systems; self-esteem; stress management and more. MMEG
is a 12 session group program that runs for 10 consecutive weeks,
with a follow-up session at 3 months and 6 months. Each session
runs for 3-hours, usually in the evenings from 6.00pm-9.00pm.
The social anxiety group is a low-cost group
program for people experiencing difficulties in social situations,
such as: Public speaking; Initiating or maintaining conversations;
Participating in small groups; Dating; Speaking to authority
figures; Attending parties; or Eating in public.The Social Anxiety
group program is an 8-session group program which offers a cognitive
behaviour therapy (CBT) approach to dealing with social anxiety.
Sessions are run on a weekly basis and tend to run from 6pm-9pm.
Using scientific research the Psychology Clinic
has developed the Taking Charge series to assist secondary students
in taking charge of their emotional wellbeing. The series is
designed for students in years 10-12 and includes lectures,
seminars, workshops and individual assessment. Sessions can
be conducted on-site at metropolitan schools in Melbourne or
in small groups at the Psychology Clinic, which is located at
the Hawthorn Campus of Swinburne University. The group process
is facilitated by probationary psychologists, who share their
expertise in understanding human behaviour to engage students
and help them achieve their goals.
