This page contains relevant information and resources for students who are new to Australia.
Moving to a new country can be a very confusing and difficult process, especially when commencing studies at University. Below are some tips to help you make the most of your time at Swinburne and make a smoother transition to a new country and culture.
Connecting in a New Culture
Feeling connected to your peers, and your university community is fundamental to your well-being. Many International Students, nevertheless, report feeling disconnected from their new culture, and this can exacerbate the already stressful situations of settling into a new country and studying. It is important, therefore, for you to make attempts to interact with other students at Swinburne, especially those from backgrounds different to your own. University clubs and activities are a great way to meet other students and feel part of the Swinburne community, and will allow you to take a well-deserved break from your study to have some fun. Check out the Swinburne Student Amenities Association for details of upcoming events and club information.
Study Pressures
Many International Students can struggle with the pressures of study in another country. You may feel an expectation to do well because of sacrifices that may have been made in order for you to study overseas, for instance. These pressures are not necessarily unfamiliar to local students, but recent surveys have suggested that International Students may feel extra pressure due to the reduced support from family and friends, who may now seem to far away to help. A balanced lifestyle can help reduce this stress for all students, however, without jeopardising your grades. Without balance between your studies and other aspects of life, on the other hand, the stress is likely to grow, and your grades could suffer as a result. It is important for this reason that you also take the time to enjoy your stay here in Australia by getting to know the locals, and seeing what your new home has to offer. The counsellors at Student Development and Counselling can help you to develop some helpful time management strategies to optimise your performance at Swinburne, and also enjoy your time in Australia.
Who Can Help?
The Student Development and Counselling service at Swinburne is here to help all students with any difficulties they may be experiencing during their time at university, and International Students are no exception. No problem is too big or too small, the counsellors are happy to help whenever you need someone to talk to. This is a free service for all students and translators can be arranged if you are concerned about language.
