Aims and objectives

This unit of study aims to introduce you to the concepts of sustainability in engineering practice concerning local, regional and global issues.

After successfully completing this unit, you should be able to:
1. Conduct scientific research using appropriate sources of data and interpret and synthesise these in terms of ongoing scientific debates. (K1, K4, K5, S1, S2, S4, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7)
2. Discuss and debate the most effective means of dealing with a sustainability issue that is addressed in the unit of study. (K4, K5, K6, S2, A2, A5, A7)
3. Plan and design a solution to the Engineers Without Borders Challenge, assess alternative design strategies in terms of economic, social and environmental factors and justify your design in terms of these factors and standard engineering principles and practices. (K2, K3, K5, S1, S2, S3, S4, A1, A2, A3, A4, A6, A7)
4. Appraise and assess the quality of your colleagues project work and presentation skills and reflect upon your own experiences within your project team. (A4, A5, A6, A7)
5. Discuss and interpret your research and/or design findings with a your professional colleagues by conducting a professional presentation. (K4, K5, S1, S2, S3, S4, A2, A4, A5, A7)
6. Use and improve your negotiation, planning, management, research and analysis skills to form an effective part of a project team. (S2, S4, A2, A5, A6, A7)
