Overview

This unit enables students to choose, describe, apply and justify principles of assessment and intervention for individuals or groups of children who are experiencing occupational performance challenges as a result of a musculoskeletal, neurological or mental health conditions. Students learn to apply occupation focused and evidence-based assessments and interventions with children at different stages of development and their families.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Select and apply an occupational therapy conceptual practice model to children at different stages of development engaged in childhood occupations
  • Select and apply professional practice models including family centred practice, cognitive, motor and sensory approaches which will guide assessment and intervention planning
  • Analyse person, environment and occupation factors to design an intervention plan for a child or group of children with complex problems
  • Articulate professional reasoning and critique of evidence to justify and communicate intervention plans to children, parents, teachers and carers
  • Demonstrate research and communication skills
